Scientology and the Basis of Being

By Gamble Leidolf

Scientology Facts: The name Scientology means "knowing how to know," and it maintains that it "constitutes man's first real application of scientific methodology to spiritual questions." Scientology asserts it is not merely a belief system but a mode of action, and it has a complicated vocabulary of its own.

Gamble's Comments: A core aspect of the Basis of Being is that it is a belief system that requires action, either directed internally or externally, in order to be effective. A belief must have real world application if it is to be of any real use.

Scientology Facts: Its basic postulate is that experience, in this or in previous lives, is recorded in the brain as a series of "engrams." These engrams are revived and reinforced by recurring similar situations and always cause inappropriate and self-defeating behavior. One's goal of Scientology is to "process" or clear these engrams and become more self-determining.

Gamble's Comments: In order to better both ourselves and the world around us it is imperative that we work on removing the negative aspects of our being. This is a continual process that we go through and it requires ever present vigilance on our part. It is up to each individual to better themselves and not rely on technology or pharmaceuticals to correct our behaviors.

Scientology Facts: By erasing these accretions from one's present and past lives, one releases the essential, spiritual self or soul called the "thetan." Scientology has ministers who perform some religious rites and sacraments, but their main function is individual counseling. Scientology is tightly organized from the top down, with a close-knit inner circle and many highly committed adherents, including such celebrities as John Travolta and Tom Cruise. The church has impressive property holdings as well as a history of conflict with the U.S. and British governments. Scientology considers the belief in a God or gods as something personal and therefore offers no specific dogma. The nature of the Supreme Being is revealed personally through each individual as s/he becomes more conscious and spiritually aware. There exists a life energy or force (Theta) beyond and within all.

Gamble's Comments: How each person chooses to define their spiritual beliefs is truly a personal and private matter. The Basis of Being is targeted at assisting us with the very mundane task of learning how to properly interact with one another as human beings. It attempts to define the basics. How should we treat ourselves? How should we properly interact with others and the world around us?

Scientology Facts: Incarnations. There are no particular human incarnations of God, as the universal life force (Theta) is inherent in all. All humans are immortal spiritual beings (thetans) capable of realizing a nearly godlike state through Scientology practices. Origin of Universe and Life. All is manifestation of the universal spirit, which is all that actually exists. After Death. Rebirths continue until one consciously confronts all pre-birth, current-life, and previous-life traumas and realizes one's true nature as a "thetan," immortal spirit--transcending matter, energy, space, and time. Achieving this state enables the spirit to escape the cycle of birth and death--to operate independently of the physical universe and become one with God. •Why Evil? Painful experiences and harmful acts in one's prebirth, current, and past lives become imprinted in the reactive mind and lead to irrational behavior. Departures from rational thought and untrue ideas ("aberrations") can result in wrongdoing.

Gamble's Comments: It is important for us to learn from our experiences. These painful experiences, whether physical or psychological, are lessons and should be viewed as such. Only by learning from our mistakes can we truly progress. If you find yourself continually falling into the same traps and mistakes it is time to take a step back and re-examine your approach on life. Correcting these aberrations is seldom easy but then again, nothing of true worth is ever easy to come by.

Scientology Facts: Salvation. Salvation is achieved through the practices and techniques of Scientology, the ultimate goal of which is to realize one's true nature as an immortal spirit, a thetan. The path to salvation, or enlightenment, includes achieving states of increasingly greater mental awareness--Pre-Clear, Clear, and ultimately Operating Thetan. An Operating Thetan is a spirit who can control matter, energy, space, time, thought, and life. Practitioners ("Auditors") are regarded as ministers and counselors who assist others to achieve self-enlightenment. Auditors help others to identify their prebirth, current, and past-life disturbances, which are obstacles to happiness and spiritual enlightenment. Undeserved Suffering. Suffering occurs as part of the spirit's entrapment here in the physical universe. Only when the individual is aware of his spiritual nature can he identify his barriers within the universe and overcome them, rising out of a lower state and into a higher state of happiness and freedom. Contemporary Issues. Scientology regards homosexuality as an illness. Based on the belief that you cannot free yourself spiritually without working to free others, Scientology has founded and supports many organizations for social betterment, particularly in the areas of drug abuse, crime, psychiatric abuse, government abuse of law, human rights, religious freedom, education, and morality. Scientology strongly favors the use of their methodology for spiritual/mental healing over the use of conventional treatment.

Gamble's Comments: The Basis of Being strongly supports the reduction in human reliance on pharmaceuticals. It has become for to common place for people to look upon modern medicine as panacea. While many medicines do make people feel better they often are simply masking the symptoms and are not truly healing. Many medications also are used to help foster negative behaviors.

They give us the ability to remove the warnings our bodies give us when we engage in these behaviors. They also weaken the natural healing ability of the body. The over reliance on medication takes away from the bodies immune system and often cause many other negative conditions. These are referred to as “side affects” and can often times cause larger problems than the ones they are supposed to be curing.

The Basis Of Being supports all beliefs that lead to a prosperous and peaceful lifelong pursuit of happiness for not only ourselves, but those around us.
