Like many of the ‘old’ religions’ resurgence into the modern world, the interest in the Celtic Religion has grown. The biggest shift has been towards Celtic Christianity. The ancient ways of describing the relationship of man and God and the world has been getting more and more attention. Celtic Christianity has dealt with many issues that are considered contemporary ideals; the position of women in the church hierarchy, earth and environmental concerns, and the proper way of coping with and interacting with non-Christian religions.
Basically taking the best of the Christian religion and expounding on it such a way as to make it good for all. The Basis of Being will teach us that compromise and tolerance are powerful tools indeed when dealing with the twists and turns on life’s path.
It’s hard to find, though, any definitive evidence of when the Druids and the Celtic ways of Christianity split. The reason is because Celtic Christianity and Druidism are very hard to distinguish. One is steeped in magic and tradition, and the other is steeped in faith and tradition.
The Celtic Christian is very fond of art, nature, and tradition; and embraces the ideology that God put them there for man’s enjoyment. This was also largely done without the “guidance” of the Romans. Ireland is, after all, on an island. So Celtic Christianity folded over from the ancient Druidic religions. Druidism remained, though, and many say that it is near impossible to distinguish Druidism and Celtic Christianity.
Both religions are steeped in tradition and art. Celtic Christianity has its bards, as well. Those literally trained in the story-telling arts. Able to spin tales of both fact and fiction alike that is almost becomes anima to those listening.
Spinning a good yarn is something these bards may have gone to school for 12 years or more. That’s an awfully long time to learn how to sing. But life requires study; as the Basis of Being teaches; following along the teachings of several religions – to live life and do it well, requires study and above all practice.
One of the main differences between Catholicism and Celtic Christianity is the role of women in the church; many held positions of high authority. Other differences were that the Bishop held a purely ceremonial role. Leaders of a church congregation were called Abbots and Abbesses.
Other differences included how they shaved their heads and their view that some were exempt from the ‘Original Sin’. All these differences stem from the one fact that this religion caters to all walks of life…as the Basis of Being strives to do; whether you are black or white, Jewish or Muslim, the Basis of Being is for the world.
One will notice that there are several kinds of people who call themselves Celtic Christians. The population of the religion is comprised of different people from differing viewpoints and vantages. A diverse a group as any in other theological grouping, one could explore the teachings of Christ on their own terms without the dogma of a church to hinder their growth.
The Basis of Being suggests this as well. Do everything on your own terms; unless, of course it hurts yourself or others.
Celtic Christianity is experiencing a revival of sorts. Centering on a more ‘free form’ practice of faith in God. Some say that it is everything “you” expect it to be in a religion. A religion for the masses…? A religion that shapes itself around the individual practicing it? The main tenants remain today as; love of nature, lack of dogmatism, and the complete tolerance of “rival” religions - A religion or belief system that fits very nicely with the Basis of Being because of this aspect.
The Basis Of Being supports all beliefs
that lead to a prosperous and peaceful lifelong pursuit
of happiness for not only ourselves, but those around us.
