How often have you heard or used the phrase, "It's just common sense?" If you are like myself,
you have probably either heard or used those words more
times than you can count. However, if something is "common"
sense then why do people so often fail to see it? In this
day and age it seems as though sense is not as common as
people say. For instance, when someone orders a coffee from
a restaurant, it is common sense to believe the coffee is
going to be hot. This in turn should lead one to the common
understanding that hot liquid can burn flesh. However, as
you are probably aware, a lawsuit was filed and in fact
won based on the fact that a proprietor did not label the
coffee cup with the phrase, "Contents May Be Hot." How could a person who be knowledgeable enough to earn a
drivers license and yet not know that coffee is hot?
The Basis of Being is a guide book to help
people find their way in this crazy world of ours using
common sense. It is based on using our basic human faculties
that used to help navigate us through this journey we call
life. I say used to because modern society has caused us
to forget what once used to be common knowledge. A major
part of our life journey requires we the travelers to hone
our minds and bodies. A well prepared traveler following
the Basis of Being would not have been caught up in the
above legal proceeding for a couple of reasons. First, they
would have realized not only that coffee is in fact hot
and can burn, but if burnt by the hot liquid, it was nobody's
fault but their own. A person using common sense would also
learn their lesson, meaning they gathered the knowledge
they required to avoid repeated mistakes.
This is just one basic example. I am sure
you can think of any number of foolish things you have either
witnessed or heard about, and possibly had a laugh over.
It is situations like these that bring one to realize common
sense is not so common. In fact it seems to be less and
less common every day. In fact, it is to a point we are
outright rude to one another. Is there ever a reason to
be rude to someone? Possibly when they are rude first? Have
you ever been the one to start an argument?
It was because of an argument that I met Liam
Ballinagar and within days, the effort of writing the Basis
Of Being began. Together we realized that people need more
than a simple guide to regain their common sense. People
need a guide covering all aspects of living life. We can
live in peace and harmony together if we know the Basis
Of Being. We felt the guide needed to be something that
had a universal message. This being the case, the guide
could not be spiritual or political in nature since these
two forces are at the core of many of the worlds conflicts.
No, we needed something that was more mundane and basic;
something that would ring true with every human being. And
from this thinking, the Basis of Being emerged. It is based
on the fundamentals of human behavior and learning. It focuses
on how we interact with one another on a basic human level,
free of any other influence. It acts as a guide to being
a good person and lays the foundation or basis of what it
is to be a human being. Spirituality, politics or anything
else can be added to this foundation if one so desires so
long as they are not in conflict with the Basis of Being.
Anything that would cause you to treat your fellow man badly
has no place here.
Once we figured out what we wanted to accomplish
we had to figure out what the best course of action would
be. We realized early on that any attempt to exhaustively
explain what it means to be a decent and productive human
being would result in multiple tomes of information. So
we decided that it was not up to us to explain every nuance
to our audience, it was both impractical and very probably
impossible. We are human beings just like anyone else and
subject to the same flaws and shortcomings. We had not basis
of authority that would permit us to tell others how to
live. So we decided that the best solution is for people
to learn on their own. All we need to do is provide the
basics and point people in the right direction. Telling
someone how to act is not the answer. The true answer is
for people to learn on their own and act properly because
they desire to, not because they are told to do so.
With these thoughts in mind we set about and
started to put together little phrases and ideas. These
all culminated into what you now have in your hands The
Maxims of the Basis of Being. They are short thoughts and
phrases that embody the ideals of being a good human being.
They are not laws or commandments. They are simply road
signs on this journey of ours. Some may indicate dangerous
areas we have to navigate and others may simply be there
to point out scenic views of things not to miss while we
travel. Some will be forthright and obvious and others may
be more cryptic. This is all done with a purpose. The purpose
is to help all of us on this planet we call Earth learn
to live together in understanding. The Maxim's are merely
a tool to help you in the process. Each is an idea of principle
in its own right but you can also glean so much more by
delving deeper into their meaning. You are not expected
to blindly follow these Maxim's as if they were laws. In
fact we expect quite the opposite. You should read each
carefully and analyze it to determine how it affects you.
All things are not the same to all people. There is no single
right answer. Each person must find their own right answer.
But, in the end it is left up to the traveler to decide
if they want to follow these tidbits of common sense. We
are simply offering a guide to the basics of living as a
human being. It is up to you to decide if you want to follow
the guide or continue to wander on aimlessly and at odds
with your fellow man.
We welcome your feedback and thoughts and
hope that this book helps make your journey through life
a little easier.
Book 1: Chapter 13: Maxim 12: If you carry the burden of a lie, you must relieve yourself of it no matter what the consequences. Otherwise, it will eat you to the core and consume you; nothing is worth this price.
